We are excited to announce that Rivers & Roots has partnered with Janak International Academy, located in Mithila Municipality, Dhanusa, Nepal. This marks a significant milestone for Rivers & Roots as it represents our first expansion outside the Kathmandu Valley. The partnership aims to foster environmental awareness and education among the youth, empowering them to take charge of sustainability in their community.
Under the leadership of Sachin Kumar Singh, Project Manager at Rivers & Roots, a comprehensive plan has been developed to establish a Rivers & Roots organization at the academy. The initiative will kick off with a series of exciting events designed to engage students in environmental education and action.

October 22nd, 2024: Climate Change Impacts and the Scenario in Nepal + Collaboration with YASEN
On October 22nd, the Rivers & Roots Club at Janak International Academy will host an engaging session focused on the impacts of climate change in Nepal. Students will gain a deeper understanding of how climate change is affecting their country and their community. In partnership with Youth Action for Sustainable and Eco Nepal (YASEN), this event will also explore ways youth can take action to tackle these challenges. The collaboration with YASEN will provide students with real-world insights and inspire them to contribute toward creating sustainable solutions.
October 25th, 2024: Club Formation, Dustbin Distribution, and Tools Introduction
October 25th marks the official formation of the Rivers & Roots Club at Janak International Academy. To kickstart the club’s waste management initiative, the school will distribute dustbins and badges to the students, helping them organize and segregate waste more effectively. The event will also introduce weighing machines that will track the volume of waste collected and ensure that recycling practices are maintained and monitored effectively.
October 29th, 2024: Trash Competition
The month of activities will culminate with an exciting Trash Competition on October 29th. Students will actively participate in collecting and segregating recyclable waste from the school and surrounding community. Prizes will be awarded to those who contribute the most, encouraging responsible waste management and fostering a sense of environmental stewardship among the participants. This hands-on competition will empower students to take the lead in addressing the waste crisis in their community and will be a great step toward fostering long-term sustainable practices.
These events mark the beginning of a new initiative in Mithila Municipality, with hopes of expanding Rivers & Roots clubs to other schools in the region, creating a ripple effect of positive environmental action across Dhanusa and beyond.

A Pilot Project with Far-reaching Potential
This project at Janak International Academy is a pilot initiative, and we have high hopes for its success. Our aim is to establish a solid foundation in Mithila Municipality, proving that environmental education and action can thrive in regions outside the Kathmandu Valley. If the pilot is successful, we plan to expand Rivers & Roots clubs to other schools within Mithila Municipality and eventually throughout Dhanusa District.

By empowering young minds to actively participate in climate change mitigation and waste management, we believe we can foster a long-lasting positive impact on the environment and the communities of Mithila and beyond.
